What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions at complete rest.

BMR Formulas Used

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (Most Accurate):
Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) - 161

Activity Multipliers

  • Sedentary (1.2): Little or no exercise
  • Lightly active (1.375): Light exercise 1-3 days/week
  • Moderately active (1.55): Moderate exercise 3-5 days/week
  • Very active (1.725): Hard exercise 6-7 days/week
  • Extra active (1.9): Very hard exercise & physical job

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.

BMI Categories

Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
Normal weight: BMI 18.5 - 24.9
Overweight: BMI 25 - 29.9
Obese: BMI 30 or greater

BMI Formula

BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)²
Note: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic of body fatness or health. It may not be accurate for athletes, pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
